In 1940, the Second Vienna Award gave back Northern Transylvania, including Satu Mare, to Hungary. During WWII, its then considerable Jewish population suffered persecution as part of the Holocaust.

In the Holon cemetery, on 13 June 2000, Yehuda Fried and Yossi Klein's organization inaugurated the Holocaust memorial "Szatmár, Nagykároly és környéke", the generous donation of Elefant Icu.
